School Project for Application of Resources and Energy
The SPARE was initiated by non-governmental organizations more than 20 years ago. Teachers and NGOs in 17 countries use SPARE materials (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirgyzstan, Moldova, North Makedonia, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan). More than 55000 schoolkids participated in SPARE actions.
Many of serious global environmental problems are caused with climate change. The SPARE idea - to move from the consideration of global challenges to practical climate actions by schoolkids, get an answer to the question: “How can we get necessary energy services (for heating, lighting, cooking, transportation, etc) without extra damage and dangerous consequences for nature?”
SPARE is a bright example of education for sustainable development. This project both provides knowledge, and motivate participants to personal actions, it gives opportunity to increase efficiency of energy use in practice – at school, homes, in everyday life. The project helps to deal with environmental, economic and social problems connected to energy use. Results of investigations and findings of schoolkinds in the sphere of energy and resources may be useful for parents, friends and neighbors.
SPARE started in Russia (North-West regions) in 1996. Since that time more than 800 schools became active SPARE participants, around 3400 schools use various SPARE materials on climate, energy, and environment, on sustainable use of energy and resources, about energy efficiency, renewables and other climate friendly solutions.
School pupils under the teachers’ leadership investigate resources for saving energy and resources, propose energy efficient solutions and available RE sources for school, homes, local community. Spare pupils share their proposals and experiences with friends, parents, local citizens, school administration and local authorities. SPARE in Russia today unites 2100 teachers and 81000 pupils. Since SPARE start more than 2000 SPARE actions was organized, like annual international Energy Saving Day, Day of the Earth, Car Free Day and many others.
The network of regional coordinators and experts develops SPARE in Russia in cooperation with educational institutions and other stakeholders. They work in Arkhangelsk, Bruyansk, Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Yekaterinburg, Karelia, Kaliningrad, Khanty-Mansy okrug (Yugra), Moscow and Moscow oblast, Murmansk oblast, Nizhni Novgorod, St.Petersburg and Leningrad oblast.
Main SPARE goal – reduction of Green House Gas emission to mitigate dangerous consequences of climate change. The fastest and cheapest way to reach this goal is more efficient and more economic use of available now energy. One kilowatt saved with energy efficient measures costs 3-4 times less than one kilowatt produced with any energy source, and doesn’t give any negative impact to nature and climate. Opportunities foe efficient energy use in our everyday life are unlimited, and change of behaviour doesn’t mean reducing comfort.
If you agree that we all should be more efficient
and avoid extra consumption of energy and resources –
