The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published the Energy Efficiency 2018 report, in which experts named the energy efficiency “the cornerstone” of a reliable and environmental sustainable global power system.  Conclusions of international analysts may become the guideline to follow for many countries, Russia being one of them, focused at economical growth, representatives of public environmental organizations believe.

Russia’s positions in the international rating of energy efficiency of the major world states composed by the American Council for Energy-Efficient Economy (АСЕЕЕ) dropped down. At that, both experts and public environmental activists are sure that energy efficiency might become the core element of modernization and decarbonization of the country’s economy.

“Outcomes of the two decades of reforms in the Russian power sector disappointed those who stand for liberalization and decarbonization,” authors of the Report published by the Oxford Energy Institute wrote.

The President of Russia signed a law that abolishes mandatory energy audits, but at the same time obliges organizations to reduce the use of energy resources. In the opinion of the environmental community, reserves for the improvement of energy efficiency of buildings and organizations’ energy efficient management are enormous and have not been realized yet.

The report of the International Expert Group on the climate change regarding the temperature increase on the planet had made a lot of noise yet before it has been publicized. Civil society activists believe that the actual figures of two or one point five degrees are less important than recognition of the urgency of specific universal actions on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the forecast of the International Energy Association (IEA), the world annual biofuel production will reach 150 million tons of oil energy equivalent by 2030. Proponents of bioenergy argue that there is no better alternative to oil. Representatives of civil society and experts warn against certain negative consequences of obtaining and using biofuel.

On the 26th of May, the Round table “Best municipal practices of climate adaptation and role of civil society organizations” within the Forum became the platform to discuss the best practices of climate adaptation in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Helsinki, view of Ministry of Nature Use to international climate cooperation, approaches of Russian and British scientists to assess the climate change consequences and adaptation challenge, priorities of Coalition for protection of climate and clean air at UNEP, and experience of Russian Social-Ecological Union (RSEU) in supporting of local climate actions.
